Tobe Hooper's Invaders From Mars is an anomaly among the 1980's remakes of 1950's B-Movie Horrors because it doesn't attempt to make its source material frightening for a later era so much as it is interested in recreating the feeling of watching those films in the 50's, with all the attendant creepiness and paranoia. Invaders From Mars uses the best available talent (Dan O'Bannon, John Dykstra and Stan Winston among them) to make an intentionally artificial out-of-time world, where everything seems not so much fake as it does made. This is a world not of our own, but made from and out of Sci-Fi Schlock of old. That Hooper turns around and makes the subtexural threat not communism but the…

Caught somewhere between a kids fantasy movie and an adult horror movie, this was a great watch for a weekend afternoon. It’s far from my favorite Hooper, but it’s fun and full of that whimsical 80’s sci-fi aesthetic. I loved the silly looking giant toothy heads with feet Martian monsters and all the lovingly crafted practical effects. Still, it doesn’t always walk that line between kid and adult as well as it wants to. The ending doesn’t really match everything that comes before it.
For me, the biggest draw to this was Karen Black. I’ll watch her in anything because she is perfect and we never deserved her while we had her. The fact that the kid is played by her actual son is just icing on the cake.
Bananameter: 🍌 Louise Fletcher shoving a frog in her face can surely cure any bad mood 🍌

Another Cannon Seal of Approval!!
This was a fun 50's style Sci-Fi movie if a little bit slow paced in parts but was totally worth watching for the ending alone ... classic!!!
Also for some reason the main alien/monster reminded me of

If you thought Invasion of the Body Snatchers lacked slimy aliens, horny teens and Marines who have no qualms about killing Martians, boy do I have a movie for you.

Tobe Hooper's take on Invasion of the Body Snatchers is an ambitiously zany 80s spectacle of cheese. A light hearted suburban nightmare that's highlighted by dramatic performances and endearing practical FX. A low key 80s gem!
After David witnesses a bizarre object land in his backyard everyone around him starts acting strangely. And why do they all have a mysterious marking on the back of their necks? First his parents, then his teachers will David be next???
There's lots to enjoy here. Karen Black's dramatically campy performance, the rubbery and gooey alien designs, the retro sci-fi meets 80s horror vibes, imaginative settings and endless charm.
A perfect Sunday afternoon kinda film.

"OOOOHHHH"
People are acting weird, dad works for NASA, mom eats raw meat and burned bacon, the teacher eats live frogs and there's aliens parked over the hill. A young boy must navigate through all that while battling Martians.
Invaders from Mars is yet another 80's horror movie with killer practical effects, costumes and creature designs. The set for the spaceship is quite unique and the weirdness displayed on-screen whenever those martians show up is entertaining and fun. The first time we see them remains my favorite moment. The problem is we see them for about 2 minutes in the first hour and then we don't see them again until the third act and this movie doesn't have much going…

Hooptober XI: Grisly Ghouls and Occult Occurences 🧟♂️(6/31)
Criteria:A Tobe Hooper film (there must always be a Tobe Hooper film)“You’re very lucky, David Gardner. Not everyone gets to meet the supreme Martian intelligence.”
Tobe Hooper does a remake of the 50’s Sci-fi classic (which I’ve actually seen and reviewed before and will link below). Certainly not as good as Carpenter’s work with The Thing, such are the budget limitations of a Cannon film hah, but I think this is notable in its own right!
Some of the short are very reminiscent of the 1950’s original, so I think Hooper was likely a fan of that. And by god, if this isn’t some spooky vibes, Fa Real! I think Hooper…

Tobe Hooper goes the Joe Dante route with "Invaders from Mars," a family-friendly remake of the same-named 1953 science fiction/horror film. A plot to turn townspeople into mindless drones, gooey alien creatures, and an elementary school-aged hero come together for a film that offers watchable and mostly innocuous fun.
The story is the straightforward stuff of B-movies: martians land on Earth and begin to convert humans into mind-controlled slaves. A suspicious young boy starts to question the local strangeness and soon becomes a hero in the battle to rid the town of the space-borne threat.
Hooper's eye for interesting angles and compositions adds some visual panache to the affair, while the special effects are nicely accomplished. The director keeps the…

Review by Jon Peters ★★★½
“…I haven't been up there since I was a kid”, says the town's police chief, in reference to all the strange events happening at Copper Hill, just beyond David's (Hunter Carson) house. That line was delivered by Jimmy Hunt, the child star of the original 1953 classic INVADERS FROM MARS, in a fun cameo and nod to that film from Tobe Hooper, in case you were wondering about what type of remake Hooper was aiming for. It's a loving homage to the films of his youth, just wrapped in the excess of Cannon Films and their blank checks. But the film did little to improve Hooper’s career, which was beginning to get questioned after the ill-advised article that alluded to…

Though I was unimpressed with this remake on first viewing (a decade ago), I now find that I enjoy it quite a bit. It is a faithful homage to the 1953 classic and tries its best to re-create the gauzy dreaminess of the OG version. I think I was too emotionally attached to the first one's unusual art direction and sets (per William Cameron Menzies). However Tobe Hooper creates an above-average effort. I think the original hit differently because none of us were familiar with "camp" in the 50s or having many scifi films told from a child's perspective....and so IFM was a real odd bird. I think watching them as a double feature would be most interesting.
