Are CDs a good investment in 2024?
With higher APYs and possible interest rate cuts coming, certificates of deposit (CDs) could be worth adding to your personal finances in 2024. CDs are safe investments when you put your money in FDIC-insured banks (or NCUA-insured credit unions).
CD rate forecast: 2024
The Fed kept its rate the same after its first meeting of 2024 on Jan. 30-31. Projections suggest that we may see no rate increases in 2024, and that the Fed might start dropping its rate as soon as March, according to the CME FedWatch Tool on Jan.
So, should you open a CD now or wait? It could very well be the time to buy, especially since the Fed has indicated it will likely stop raising rates and start cutting them in 2024. Although many investors had anticipated a rate cut in March, Fed Chair Jerome Powell recently suggested that a cut was unlikely that soon.
The Fed's forecast projects a median federal funds rate of 3.6% in September 2025 — a full percentage point lower than the forecast for September 2024.
“The markets are currently pricing in a 4% chance of a rate hike,” Ghaussy said. “And a 42% chance of a rate cut in March 2024.” More than six 25-basis-point rate cuts are expected by December 2024, he continued. That would equate to a drop of 1.5%.
CD Rates Forecast 2024
While the federal funds rate had been steadily climbing for a couple of years, the CME FedWatch Tool, which measures market expectations for the fed fund rate changes, shows that most expect rates to fall between 4% and 4.75% by the end of 2024.
These forecasts offer valuable insights into interest rate expectations. ING's interest rate predictions indicate 2024 rates starting at 4%, with subsequent cuts to 3.75% in the second quarter. Then, 3.5% in the third, and 3.25% in the final quarter of 2024. In 2025, ING predicts a further decline to 3%.
A few local credit unions have CDs paying 6% APY or more. To open a 6% APY CD, you may need to meet certain eligibility requirements. There are also banks and credit unions with CDs paying over 5% APY, which are available nationwide.
CD rates may not be high enough to keep pace with inflation when consumer prices rise. Investing money in the stock market could generate much higher returns than CDs.
Locking in a longer-term CD now could help you preserve purchasing power if rates were to drop in the future. But depending on your risk tolerance and time horizon, there are other types of investments that might align better with your financial goals.
Where can I get 7% interest on my money?
Which bank gives 7% interest on a savings account? There are not any banks offering 7% interest on a savings account right now. However, two financial institutions are paying at least 7% APY on checking accounts: Landmark Credit Union Premium Checking Account, and OnPath Rewards High-Yield Checking.
- Credit One Bank – 5.40% APY for a one-year CD, $100,000 minimum deposit for APY.
- Navy Federal Credit Union – 5.25% APY for a one-year CD, $100,000 minimum deposit for APY.
- Suncoast Credit Union – 5.25% APY for a one-year CD, $100,000 minimum deposit for APY.
The Federal Reserve's inflation-busting rate hikes pushed annual percentage yields (APYs) on some CDs upwards of 5% in 2023. But with the central bank poised to pull back and cut interest rates, time may be running out for investors to take advantage of those exceptional APYs.
Most major forecasts expect mortgage rates to go down in 2024, but when they'll start trending back down depends on the path that inflation takes in the coming months. Right now, average 30-year mortgage rates are more than 40 basis points higher than they were this time last month.
Applicable SMART rate for the month of January-2024 is 8.68%.
Considering these factors, a conservative prediction for 30-year fixed mortgage rates by 2025 could be in the range of 5.5% to 7%. This estimate accounts for potential economic growth, the Federal Reserve's likely monetary policy responses, global market influences, and real estate market conditions.
According to the latest forecasts, UK Interest Rates are predicted to fall from 5.25% to 4.25% by the end of 2024. UK interest rates forecast for the next 5 years are to remain higher for longer than has been the case over the last two decades, with UK interest rates staying between 3% and 4%.
The average yield on a one-year CD in December 2023 was 1.86%, according to the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), while a 60-month CD was 1.40%. While those rates aren't exactly robust, they're well above recent levels.
Jumbo CDs are like regular CDs but require much larger minimum deposits. Minimum deposits for jumbo CDs are usually around $100,000.
Certificates of deposit with at least 5% interest
Also, keep in mind that many financial institutions have multiple terms that pay 5% APY or more. *These financial institutions also offer other CD terms paying above 5% APY. **The Andrews Federal Credit Union 6-month CD special is available to new members only.
Are CDs safe if the market crashes?
Market Crashes and CDs
Even if the market crashes, your CD is still safe. Your interest rate won't change, and your money is still insured. But, keep an eye on interest rates. After your CD term ends, you might find that new CDs have lower rates if the economy is still struggling.
- Accessibility. With a savings account or money market account, you're allowed to make a certain number of withdrawals of cash or transfer funds to a linked checking account. ...
- Early Withdrawal Penalties. ...
- Interest Rate Risk. ...
- Inflation Risk. ...
- Lower Returns.
CDs offer higher interest rates than traditional savings accounts, guaranteed returns and a safe place to keep your money. But it can be costly to withdraw funds early, and CDs have less long-term earning potential than certain other investments.
Consider also the rate of inflation; over 10 years, inflation could outpace the fixed return you'd be earning with a 10-year CD. It may make more sense to put your money in a shorter-term CD, like a five-year CD, that likely offers a higher guaranteed APY than a 10-year CD and then reevaluate again in five years.
Is a 12-Month CD Worth It? A 12-month CD can be a worthwhile investment if you're seeking guaranteed growth and are able to keep your money invested for a year. Before investing, be sure you're getting the best one-year CD rates by shopping around and comparing rates from different banks.
