Why might bonds be a bad choice?
Bond risks
Historically, bonds have provided lower long-term returns than stocks. Bond prices fall when interest rates go up. Long-term bonds, especially, suffer from price fluctuations as interest rates rise and fall.
Bonds are often touted as less risky than stocks—and for the most part, they are—but that does not mean you cannot lose money owning bonds. Bond prices decline when interest rates rise, when the issuer experiences a negative credit event, or as market liquidity dries up.
Cons: Rates are variable, there's a lockup period and early withdrawal penalty, and there's a limit to how much you can invest. Only taxable accounts are allowed to invest in I bonds (i.e., no IRAs or 401(k) plans).
Corporate bonds are issued by corporations to raise money for funding business needs. Government bonds are issued by governments to fund the government's needs, such as to pay for infrastructure projects, government employee salaries, and other programs.

- Exposed to rising interest rates.
Given the numerous reasons a company's business can decline, stocks are typically riskier than bonds. However, with that higher risk can come higher returns. The market's average annual return is about 10%, not accounting for inflation.
All bonds carry some degree of "credit risk," or the risk that the bond issuer may default on one or more payments before the bond reaches maturity. In the event of a default, you may lose some or all of the income you were entitled to, and even some or all of principal amount invested.
What disadvantage do bonds present for the issuer? Issuer pays set amount of interest even in bad years or if interest rates drop. The bonds of a firm in poor financial health may be downgraded, making them hard to sell unless offered at a discount or high interest rate.
What are the pros and cons of buying bond funds?

Pros and Cons – Bonds vs Stocks
However, in return for the risk, stockholders have a greater potential return. Bonds are more beneficial for investors who want less exposure to risk but still want to receive a return. Fixed-income investments are much less volatile than stocks, and also much less risky.
Default risk is the possibility that a bond's issuer will go bankrupt and will be unable to pay its obligations in a timely manner if at all. If the bond issuer defaults, the investor can lose part or all of the original investment and any interest that was owed.
- No access to your savings for the fixed term.
- Not suitable for regular savings.
- Penalty charges or loss of interest if you need the money early.
Bonds are considered as a safe investment & also come with some risks which are Default Risk, Interest Rate Risk, Inflation Risk, Reinvestment Risk, Liquidity Risk, and Call Risk. Investors who like to take risks tend to make more money, but they might feel worried when the stock market goes down.
Bonds in general are considered less risky than stocks for several reasons: Bonds carry the promise of their issuer to return the face value of the security to the holder at maturity; stocks have no such promise from their issuer.
Over the long term, high-quality bond funds have tended to offer better diversification against stock volatility and higher yield potential than cash. While the road ahead may be a bit bumpy, sticking to your investment plan is an important step toward keeping your long-term goals on track.
It's an important question to ask if you're trying to grow wealth. Investing can offer the potential for higher returns, but it can also mean taking more risks. Saving money tends to be safer, though it may limit growth. If you're looking for an investment that's also safe, you might consider bonds.
Risk: Bonds are generally thought to be lower risk than stocks, though neither asset class is risk-free. “Bondholders are higher in the pecking order than stockholders, so if the company goes bankrupt, bondholders get their money back before stockholders,” Wacek says.
- Values Drop When Interest Rates Rise. You can buy bonds when they're first issued or purchase existing bonds from bondholders on the secondary market. ...
- Yields Might Not Keep Up With Inflation. ...
- Some Bonds Can Be Called Early.
Which type of risk is most significant for bonds?
Interest rate risk is the most important type of risk for bonds. It is the risk between the events of reduction in price and reinvestment risk. This type of risk occurs as a result of the changes in the interest rate. Interest rate risk is avoidable or can be eliminated.
There are two primary reasons why long-term bonds are subject to greater interest rate risk than short-term bonds: There is a greater probability that interest rates will rise (and thus negatively affect a bond's market price) within a longer time period than within a shorter period.
What causes bond prices to fall? Bond prices move in inverse fashion to interest rates, reflecting an important bond investing consideration known as interest rate risk. If bond yields decline, the value of bonds already on the market move higher. If bond yields rise, existing bonds lose value.
Given the numerous reasons a company's business can decline, stocks are typically riskier than bonds. However, with that higher risk can come higher returns.
High-quality bond investments remain attractive. With yields on investment-grade-rated1 bonds still near 15-year highs,2 we believe investors should continue to consider intermediate- and longer-term bonds to lock in those high yields.
