Is it better for a student to get a loan or the parent?
While parents may want to pay for their child's college, a student loan may still be a great option due to the lower interest rate and government subsidies. Ultimately, however, the student is on the hook for payments if the parent cannot come up with the money.
Parent PLUS Loans typically have higher interest rates than a student's federal student loans. This means that over the life of the loan, you could end up paying significantly more in interest with a Parent PLUS Loan compared to a federal student loan taken out by a student.
It doesn't matter if you don't live with your parent or parents; you still must report information about them if you're considered a dependent student for FAFSA purposes.
A student loan is borrowed by a student, while a parent loan is borrowed by a parent. While parents can cosign a student loan, the student remains the primary borrower.
Lower interest rates: For most borrowers, federal loans offer lower interest rates than private loans. If you qualify for subsidized loans, use them first. They are your cheapest option, since the government pays the interest while you're in school.
Student loans taken out by parents, such as federal parent PLUS loans and private parent loans, affect only the credit of the person who took them out. So if a parent takes out a federal parent PLUS loan, for instance, to help you pay for school, it affects their credit.
How much can I borrow? The maximum PLUS loan amount you can borrow is the cost of attendance at the school your child will attend minus any other financial assistance your child receives. The cost of attendance is determined by the school.
Don't worry, this is a common question for many students. The good news is that the Department of Education doesn't have an official income cutoff to qualify for federal financial aid. So, even if you think your parents' income is too high, it's still worth applying (plus, it's free to apply).
You won't have to provide any info about your biological parent or your guardian for the FAFSA® if you're independent. Otherwise, you'll still be considered a dependent student for federal financial aid purposes—even if you don't have any contact or a relationship with your parents.
Can I Skip FAFSA Questions About Assets? You can only skip FAFSA questions about assets if you meet the qualifications to do so based on your answers to other questions on the application. However, that's only because your asset information at that point doesn't affect your eligibility for federal student aid.
Can my child get a student loan on their own?
For a private student loan, lenders have income and credit qualifications that must be met either by the applicant on their own, or with a co-signer. If parents are unable or unwilling to co-sign, you will need to show stable income as well as an established credit history to qualify on your own.
If you got your Direct PLUS Loan on or after July 1, 2023, and before July 1, 2024, it will have a fixed interest rate of 8.05% after the payment pause ends.
A subsidized loan is your best option. With these loans, the federal government pays the interest charges for you while you're in college.
Given the option, you should accept a Direct Subsidized Loan first. Then, if you still need additional financial aid to pay for college or career school, accept the Direct Unsubsidized Loan.
Interest can make student loans more expensive, while inflation can make that debt harder to manage alongside other bills. Paying off some of your debt during your studies could ease the burden later on and save you money on interest.
Banks | Interest Rates |
---|---|
Union Bank of India | 8.15% p.a. to 12.55% p.a. |
State Bank of India | 8.15% to 11.15% p.a. |
Punjab National Bank | 4% p.a. to 11.25% p.a. |
IDFC FIRST Bank | 10% p.a. to 15% p.a. |
But during the Direct PLUS Loan Application process, you'll go through a credit check to confirm one specific requirement: not having an adverse credit history. a recent bankruptcy discharge, tax lien, wage garnishment, or foreclosure.
PLUS loans.
Parent and grad PLUS loans allow you to borrow up to the total cost of attendance, and there's no income limit to qualify. PLUS loans are another type of unsubsidized loan.
No minimum credit score is needed to get a parent PLUS loan. Federal loans aren't like private parent student loans, which use your credit score to determine whether you qualify and what interest rate you'll receive. But parent PLUS loans do have a credit check, and you won't qualify if you have adverse credit history.
Total (subsidized and unsubsidized) | Maximum subsidized | |
---|---|---|
Independent undergraduates (and dependent undergraduates whose parents can't get Direct PLUS Loans) | $57,500 | $23,000 |
Graduate and professional students | $138,500 | $65,000 |
Is $20,000 in student loans a lot?
If those monthly payments look low compared to what most borrowers pay, it's because most borrowers carry a lot more than $20,000 in student loan debt. As of March 2023, the average federal student loan debt in the United States was about $37,720, according to a BestColleges analysis of Education Department data.
If you've been denied a Parent PLUS loan because of an adverse credit history, you can qualify for the loan if you obtain an endorser. An endorser is like a cosigner. The endorser agrees to repay the PLUS loan if the parent defaults or is otherwise unable to repay the debt.
There are no set income cutoffs for financial aid because of the number of factors that are included in the need-based calculation beyond income. Unless parents are in a situation where they don't need money for their child to go to school, everyone should fill out the FAFSA.
There's no maximum income limit to qualify for financial aid on the FAFSA. That's because there are too many variables to account for. However, your and your family's income does influence how much aid you may qualify for.
You have multiple options to consider, including federal financial aid, scholarships, grants, a job and student loans. Although paying for college by yourself is a huge financial undertaking, it's possible with enough research, hard work and planning.
